The universities landscape has never been so vibrant in India. In an unprecedented trend, several private universities have been established in the country-140 private universities to be precise.
Gujarat has been on the top of the list with 28 private universities, followed by Maharashtra 15, Madhya Pradesh 14, and Karnataka 10, Chhattisgarh 7, Bihar, Odisha, Uttarakhand and Telangana with 5 each, during this period.
A senior education ministry official declared that the private universities adhered to UGC norms and no violations have been cited thus far. The senior official also mentioned that those private universities can award general degree programs without the significant approval of the UGC.
He added that the approvals for running professional and medical programs are granted by the respective regulatory or statutory bodies and such programs are ruled by renowned bodies such as All Indian Council for Technical Education, National Medical Commission, and Dental Council of India. The highest number of private universities, which is 40,were established in the academic session of 2018-19.
