A massive faculty shortage has been reported in 23 centres of Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs). The report says that premiere institutes have a faculty shortage of 34 percent, with only one – IIT-Mandi in Himachal Pradesh — having more than the sanctioned strength.
This is not restricted centres but almost all major centres are facing the shortage. The Union Human Resource Development (HRD) ministry is trying to acquire visas for foreign faculty to overcome this problem.

Every year student number is increasing but the teachers’ ration is not increasing as expected. The experts mentioned students who are going abroad for job hardly comes back. Earlier, students only return to become faculty member but this figure has also gone down.
IIT-Mandi has four faculty members more than the sanctioned strength, IIT-Bhilai, in Chhattisgarh is in the worst spot with 58 percent vacancies. Among the top five ranked IITs, Kharagpur has 46 percent vacancies, followed by 36 percent in Kanpur, 29 percent in Delhi.
