All India Survey on Higher Education 2018-19 (AISHE) surveyed 38,179 colleges and 64% of them had just 500 students enrolled in them. Even amongst them more than half of the colleges had less than 200 students enrolled.
The annual survey, which is conducted by the Ministry of Human Resource Development, released their survey last week and according to that survey only 4% of all the colleges in India house more than 3,000 students.
According to AISHE 2018-19, 3.74 crore students were enrolled in higher education institutes all over India, and it is the highest number ever recorded.
“Inclusion of name of an Institution in any of the list in the [AISHE] portal and this publication does not confer the status of recognition to the Institution by the Ministry of Human Resource Development,” the survey stated.
A significant increase in the number of new and upcoming colleges has been a reason for the decline of number of enrollments per college. As a result of which, the average enrollment per college has declined from 703 students per college to 693 students over the past eight years.
