Subia Parveen a Jamia student will be pursuing her class XI studies under the Kennedy-Lugar Youth Exchange and Study programme in the US. It was her love for writing and poetry that got her a scholarship worth the US $28000. Subia Parveen is a student of class X of Jamia Secondary School, Delhi. Subia who got selected for the Kennedy-Lugar Youth Exchange and Study (YES) programme, sponsored by the US Department of State, is set to fulfil her American dreams.
The programme will give her an opportunity to pursue her class XI studies in the US. She says that she writes poems on social causes and has been a debater throughout her school life. She has also won several awards in various writing competitions. As writing an essay is an essential part of the application process, her writing abilities came in handy. Subia, who has been brought up in a humble household was asked to write about her aim in life.
Subia’s father Kalimuddin Ahmad, who could study only till class XII is an electrician with the Jamia Millia Islamia University. So he understood the importance of education. She will be spending an academic year in the US and will be studying Science in her class XII. She is interested to pursue a career in biotechnology and hopes the education acquired in the US will help her achieve her aim.
Started in 2002 this scholarship programme benefitted several students. Along with Subia, three other Indian students also got selected for this scholarship which is for high school students from countries with significant Muslim populations.
