The 2025 ETS Human Progress Report has highlighted that AI literacy has become a critical skill for remaining competitive in the job market. However, the report stresses that technical proficiency alone is insufficient—employees must also develop creativity, problem-solving, and communication skills to ensure long-term success.
Rising Demand for AI and Digital Literacy
The report indicates that employees are increasingly aware of the need to enhance their technical and AI-related skills over the next two to three years. This trend is particularly pronounced among younger generations and professionals working in highly technical or fast-growing industries, where competition continues to intensify.
Growing Interest in Skills-Based Credentials
More than 60% of individuals expressed an interest in earning credentials in in-demand skills such as AI, digital literacy, creativity, and communication. This reflects a growing recognition that acquiring certifications and specialised training can provide a competitive edge in the evolving job market.
Evolving Skill Priorities Across Generations
The report also highlights differences in skill development priorities across generations. Gen X professionals, particularly those in or aspiring to senior roles, are more focused on improving their technical skills (40%), compared to Millennials (37%) and Gen Z (34%). This suggests that as careers progress, the emphasis on technical proficiency and leadership skills continues to grow.
Human Progress Index and Workforce Trends
Based on insights from 18,000 people across 18 countries, the 2025 Human Progress Report notes a 2-point increase in the Human Progress Index, driven by improvements in education access, career growth, and skill development. However, the report cautions that progress remains uneven, underscoring the need for greater investment in workforce training and skills-based learning opportunities.
Employers and employees alike acknowledge that skills-based credentials are crucial for unlocking new opportunities and advancing in today’s rapidly changing job market. As industries continue to evolve, a balance of AI literacy and essential human skills will be key to professional success.
