Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) has asked the centre for the permission to confer an honorary Doctor of Letters (D.Litt.) degree on the crown prince of Saudi Arabia, Mohammed bin Salman , in “view of his exemplary services and contribution to global affairs”.
The AMU submitted the first proposal on September 2021 regarding the same to the Ministry of External Affairs. The list of the honorary degrees given to foreign dignitaries since the inception of the university was also sent to the Ministry in October 2021 as per the request of the Ministry following the submission.
The reiteration was submitted to the Ministry in January 2022, as part of the request seeking a year’s extension for the Vice-Chancellor Prof Tariq Mansoor. The proposal on the honorary doctorate for Mohammed bin Salman is “under consideration of the Government of India”, according to official records.
“In view of the exemplary services and contribution to the global affairs of His Royal Highness Mohammed Bin Salman, crown prince, kingdom of Saudi Arabia, the AMU proposes to confer D.Litt. degree (honoris causa) to His Royal Highness. This gesture will further strengthen the already cordial and friendly relations between the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and India,” states the proposal that AMU submitted to the centre.
