Alliance University, South India’s first UGC-recognised private university, has launched Ph.D. VISTA (Venture Innovation for Social Transformation and Advancement), a unique doctoral programme designed to bridge academic research and entrepreneurial action for social impact.
Ph.D. VISTA aims to nurture scholar-practitioners who transform research into scalable solutions. Open to candidates from Business, Law, Liberal Arts, and Engineering, the programme integrates interdisciplinary learning with hands-on innovation. Curated by Nagaraja Prakasam, a veteran in grassroots entrepreneurship and impact investment, the initiative focuses on solving real-world challenges through purpose-driven ventures.
The standout feature of Ph.D. VISTA is “Solving for Bharat”, a mandatory course with 80% field immersion and 20% theory, based on Prakasam’s book Back to Bharat. Scholars collaborate with industry, NGOs, and government to address pressing issues, from building startups to influencing policy.
Supported by academic mentors, venture capitalists, and domain experts, candidates receive guidance through every stage of their venture—from ideation to MVP—with legal, financial, and branding assistance. Joint ownership and support for patenting and commercialisation are included.
The programme is full-time and welcomes working professionals with a Master’s degree (minimum 55%). Admission is based on an entrance test, interview, and a preliminary business problem statement. Duration ranges from three to six years, with outcomes evaluated on research impact or innovation.
Vice-Chancellor Dr Priestly Shan stated, “Ph.D. VISTA is where knowledge meets action. It reflects our belief that research must result in real, measurable change aligned with the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals.”
