The Andhra University established in 1926 will be turning a glorious 100 on April 26. Andhra University was ranked 1201–1500 in the world by the Times Higher Education World University Rankings of 2023 and 401–500 in Asia. The QS World University Rankings of 2023 ranked it 501–550 in Asia. It was ranked 41 in India overall by the National Institutional Ranking Framework in 2024 and 25th among universities.
The university has a rich past and eminent personalities including politicians, actors, sportspersons, scientists, academicians, statisticians and many more studied at the university.
Minister for Education and IT, Nara Lokesh, has called for the centenary celebrations of Andhra University to be conducted in a grand and prestigious manner, befitting the historic legacy of the institution. In a review meeting with Vice-Chancellor Prof. G.P. Rajasekhar at his residence in Undavalli, the minister discussed preparations for the year-long celebrations and outlined plans for the university’s revival and global recognition.

The centenary celebrations will commence on April 26, 2025, marking 100 years since the university’s establishment in 1926, and will continue till April 26, 2026. During the meeting, the VC unveiled the university’s new vision for the centenary year.
Lokesh emphasized the need to restore Andhra University to its past glory and set an ambitious goal of placing it in the Top 100 of the QS World Rankings. He assured full support and resources from the state government to achieve this vision. The minister also directed that all necessary steps be taken for institutional development and announced that vacant positions in universities would soon be filled.
King Vikram Deo Verma’s role
King Vikram Deo Verma, the Maharaja of Jeypore played a key role during the establishment of the University. He donated lands and two million rupees and provided ₹1 lakh annually to the university, an approximate figure of ₹17 lakhs between 1930s – 1940s.The Jeypore College of Technology and Science in Andhra University was founded by Maharajah Vikram Deo.

University emblem
The university emblem was designed by Sri Kowta Rammohan Sastri with the guidance of Cattamanchi Ramalinga Reddy. The rising sun represents the university itself and the radiating light rays representing its faculties of study. The lotus is the seat of Goddess Lakshmi (prosperity) and Saraswati (knowledge). The swastika is the symbol of benediction. An ocean is the vast region of knowledge. The two serpents represent the seekers and custodians of wisdom.
Andhra University is growing from strength to strength. When the new state of Andhra Pradesh was formed and came out of the Madras Presidency, the first assembly was held at the university as the then Kurnool which was the capital was unable to hold the assembly for lack of proper buildings. Since then, the university has been not only providing a guiding light to students but to society at large.
