The Madras High Court held a special sitting on Saturday, December 29, 2024, ordering the formation of an all-woman Indian Police Service (IPS) team to investigate the alleged sexual assault of a 19-year-old student at Anna University. The court’s directive extends to a related cyber-crime case concerning the First Information Report (FIR) leak detailing the assault.
In response to the incident, the National Commission for Women (NCW) dispatched a two-member fact-finding committee to Anna University on Monday. The team met with university authorities, the victim, her family, and non-governmental organizations to gather insights and assess the situation.
“To ensure accountability, the NCW assessed security at Anna University, met the Special Investigation Team (SIT), and engaged stakeholders, including NGOs and students. A detailed report with actionable recommendations was prepared. The safety of students remains non-negotiable,” the NCW posted on Tuesday on X (formerly Twitter).
The incident has drawn widespread attention, prompting urgent action to improve campus security. The SIT, composed of senior female IPS officers, has been tasked with a thorough investigation to ensure justice. Meanwhile, the NCW’s engagement underscores the necessity of prioritizing student safety and implementing robust measures to prevent such incidents.
