Australia’s Department of Home Affairs has introduced a new requirement for student visa applicants. All applications submitted on or after January 1, 2025, must include a Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE). This change will not impact applications made before this date that are accompanied by a Letter of Offer.
The government’s official notice highlights that failure to submit a CoE will render the visa application invalid. This means visa decision makers will be unable to assess the application, and applicants will not be eligible for a Bridging visa if their substantive visa application is invalid.
This update aims to standardise the process for providing evidence of an intended course of study, both for applicants inside and outside Australia. Requiring a CoE at the time of application reinforces the student’s commitment to studying at an Australian institution, helping to ensure greater stability in the international education sector.
India remains a significant source of international students for Australia, ranking second globally. Between January and September 2023, 122,391 Indian students were enrolled in Australian educational institutions. Popular fields of study include Business, Information Technology, Engineering, Science, and Hospitality, with the similarities between the educational systems of both countries making it easier for Indian students to adapt.
Australia offers various student visas, such as the Student Visa (Subclass 500), which allows stays of up to five years, and the Student Guardian Visa (Subclass 590) for parents or guardians of students under 18. Additionally, the Training Visa (Subclass 407) supports individuals gaining professional experience or development.
