In an unparalleled move, the Bihar government has directed the suspension of all state-run universities’ bank accounts, except one, and suspended the salaries of their vice-chancellors for purportedly missing a review meeting organized by the education department on 28th February 2024. The department’s communication, sent to all VCs except Kameshwar Singh Darbhanga Sanskrit University, requests an explanation from the concerned VCs regarding their absence from the meeting, which aimed to address pending examination matters and other concerns.
According to the letter issued by Education Secretary Baidyanath Yadav, if satisfactory responses are not received from the VCs within two days, the department will file FIRs against the authorities. Additionally, the letter states that the payment of VCs’ salaries has been suspended, and banks have been instructed not to operate any accounts of the respective universities until further notice.
