Canada has introduced stricter language proficiency requirements for international students applying for the Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP). Under the new rules, students must score at least 6 bands in all four sections of the IELTS exam or achieve a 7-band score in the Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) to qualify.
Stricter Rules Raise Concerns Among Students
The policy change has sparked concern among students, many of whom believe that successfully completing their studies should be enough to prove English proficiency. The new requirements add extra pressure, especially for those already facing financial difficulties while studying in Canada.
Students Risk Deportation Without Required Scores
Failing to meet the IELTS band score requirement has serious consequences. Without the required language scores, students will be forced to leave Canada.
Application Timeline for PGWP:
If the study permit is still valid, students have 180 days to apply.
If the study permit expires, they must apply within 90 days and restore their student status.
Previously, Canada accepted students with section-wise scores below 6 as long as the overall IELTS score was 6 or higher. The new policy eliminates this flexibility, making it tougher to qualify for a PGWP.
Many Students Caught Off Guard
The sudden change has left students worried and unprepared. Many assumed that completing their studies would be enough to secure a work permit, without realizing they needed to improve their English proficiency.
Additionally, students enrolled in non-recognized courses or those with poor academic performance may still fail to qualify for a PGWP, even if they meet the IELTS requirements.
This major policy shift means students must now prioritize language skills throughout their studies to ensure they remain eligible for a work permit after graduation.
