UGC plans to approve an Indian design for convocation ceremony that will replace the traditional satin gowns and caps. Few colleges such as GH Raisoni College of Engineering have already made an Indian theme for its upcoming convocation ceremony.
“Discussions have been going on for the last six months on giving our convocation a desi flavor. However, we have not decided the dress code yet. If a mandate comes from the UGC to wear Indian attires only, we will strictly adhere to it,” says director Dr. Preeti Bajaj.
Dr. Lalit Khullar, Director, Tipude College has also given thumbs up to this move. “It is a fad nowadays and a lot of institutions are trying to include Indian wear as a dress code for the convocation. So, if our students also want to wear Indian attires for the next graduation ceremony, we will happily allow them,” resolves Dr. Lalit Khullar.
At the 104th graduation ceremony of RTM Nagpur University, quite a few students attended the function donning ethnic attires.
“Our students don’t wear the colonial convocation robes and caps for the ceremony, says registrar Dr Puran Chandra Meshram adding, “Only the dignitaries on the podium wear the gowns. But if we are asked to replace even those with traditional attires, we are absolutely fine with that.”
Some of the autonomous institutions are also all geared up to give an Indian touch to their convocation ceremonies.
