Data is the new oil of the 21st century said Jayesh Ranjan, IT Secretary, Govt of Telangana. He was speaking at the Big Data in Agriculture convention 2019 here on Wednesday. Trust and data are important and imperative in using data with integrity. Elaborating on the importance, Jayesh said the govt of Telangana has used big data in several domains including transport, health and agriculture.
The Big data in agriculture convention 2019, a 3-day conference is being held at ICRISAT, Hyderabad. About 500 scientists and research scholars from across the world are in attendance.
Speaking on the efficacy of data, Jayesh said 3ys are important – volume, velocity and variety. He further added that the Telangana govt flagship program Rytu Bandhu and Rytu Bhima were possible by using humongous data. In future, one can achieve farm productivity and food security by leveraging big data. Data is useful at every stage including soil testing, equipment, Marketing, logistics, image processing and weather forecasting. Several companies find out the best time of sowing and harvesting based on historical data which also results in projecting farm production.
The importance of data is way more true as the noble prize winner too did work on precision farming in India.
Stressing the importance of digital technology Mr Jayesh said that the govt has 300 Mn database that helps to find out which citizen is eligible for government programs. The Telangana govt aims to provide broadband connectivity to 9 Mn households.
In response to the challenge in agriculture, he said the biggest challenge is to ensure remunerative prices for farmers. The govt also is keen in developing crop colonies.
