The Vice-Chancellor (VC) of Delhi University, Yogesh Tyagi takes an unexpected salary of just 1 rupee from the university.
This information was provided by the Ministry of Human Resource Development (HRD). The information was provided in a response by the Parliament, in writing, to a question that was put forward, inquiring about whether or not the VC had submitted his PAN card and Aadhaar card details to the University in the last two years. It was also asked how much salary he had earned during this time.
What Delhi University informed to the Minister of State for HRD, Satyapal Singh, was truly a surprise. When replying to it, he said, “The Delhi University has informed that the Vice-Chancellor has submitted copies of his PAN card and Aadhaar card to the university and he has chosen to take just Re 1 as salary from the university.”
While this was surely a shock for all, whether he had paid any income tax on his salary so far was also asked about. He responded to this by saying, “As per the acts and rules of Income Tax, TDS is deducted from an employee’s salary.”
In March 2016, Yogesh Tyagi, took over the university after Dinesh Singh. Tyagi had said that he wanted to take only the honorary Re. 1 from the university. Until now, there had been no official statement about this but there were rumours about the matter. The MoS HRD has now made an official statement in response to this question.
Even though this news has officially come out only recently, the word about this has been out for a while. Senior officials like the registrar and deputy registrar of the Delhi University did not comment on the matter.
The Vice-Chancellor, Yogesh Tyagi, joined the university on a deputation basis. He had previously been working at the South Asian University, which comes under the Ministry of External Affairs.
