Starting this academic year, Delhi University’s School of Open Learning (SOL) has introduced Dharmashastra and Vedic studies into its Bachelor of Arts (BA) curriculum. This move is part of the institution’s alignment with the Undergraduate Curriculum Framework 2022 (UGCF 2022) and the National Education Policy 2020 (NEP 2020), aiming to offer students a more holistic and culturally rooted education.
New Sanskrit Courses Offered
Beginning in the fourth semester (second year), BA students can now opt for two newly introduced Sanskrit courses:
- Sanskrit: Dharmashastra Studies (Minor paper)
- Sanskrit: Readings from the Vedas (Major paper)
These subjects will be delivered through Self Learning Material (SLM), consistent with SOL’s distance education model.
Academic Expansion
According to the Times of India report, this curricular addition is part of a broader academic expansion that includes 38 new papers approved across disciplines by Delhi University’s Executive Council.
Dr. Payal Mago, Director of SOL, clarified, “These are not new introductions but part of the existing Sanskrit curriculum already offered under the choice-based credit system and annual mode.”
Additional Curriculum Enhancements
In addition to the Sanskrit papers, SOL is expanding its academic offerings with:
- Value-Added Courses (VACs) such as:
Sanskrit: Yoga – Philosophy and Practice
Sanskrit: Panchkosha – Holistic Development of Personality
- General and Discipline-Specific Electives
- Ability Enhancement Courses (AECs) focused on skill development
These efforts aim to enrich the learning experience and promote a balanced education that bridges traditional knowledge with modern academic frameworks.
