The Duolingo English Test (DET), in collaboration with the Office of the Principal Scientific Adviser (PSA) to the Government of India, has opened applications for the DETermined Scholarship. This financial aid programme aims to support Indian women pursuing undergraduate or postgraduate studies in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) in the United States, beginning Spring 2026.
Substantial Financial Support
The DETermined Scholarship offers a one-time grant of USD 30,000 (approximately ₹25 lakh) to cover tuition fees. This amount will be disbursed directly to the university of enrolment, provided the institution accepts Duolingo English Test scores. The application process is currently live on the Manthan portal, with the deadline set for 30 June 2025. Results will be announced in September 2025 after a comprehensive evaluation.
Rising Participation, Persistent Barriers
According to UGC data, women’s enrolment in STEM in India has grown from 38.4% in 2014 to 42.6% in 2024. Despite this positive trend, financial constraints remain a significant obstacle for many aspiring female scientists and engineers. The DETermined Scholarship seeks to address this gap by encouraging talented women to pursue world-class education and return to India to contribute meaningfully.
Eligibility Criteria
Applicants must be Indian citizens identifying as female, currently residing in India, and should have secured at least 60% in science subjects at the senior secondary or undergraduate level. A minimum DET score of 120 is mandatory. Candidates must plan to enrol in a full-time STEM course in a U.S. university accepting DET scores.
Rigorous Selection Process
The evaluation consists of three stages: initial screening through academic records and a personal statement or video; a STEM Impact Proposal Challenge where candidates propose solutions to real-world problems; and a final virtual interview.
The PSA’s office, serving as a knowledge partner, will guide the selection and support the jury process. Leadership qualities, innovation potential, and a clear vision for post-study contribution in India are key selection criteria.
