Exams to Clear for MBA in India & Abroad
Students need to take the Graduate Management Admissions Test (GMAT). The GMAT is the standard test used for admissions to distinguished business schools, while the GRE is also accepted today, less than 10 percent of applicants to business programs make it through a GRE score. While the GMAT score is not the only criterion used for admissions, factors such as work experience, application essays, and recommendations matters a lot.
Advantages of GMAT
GMAT scores are accepted not just by top MBA colleges, but also Masters in Management or MiM programs, which are meant for recent college graduates, and require no work experience. Other business programs such as Masters programs in Business Analytics, Information Systems, or Technology Management, also accept GMAT scores. Further, GMAT scores are accepted not just by foreign business schools, but also by Indian institutions. Indian School of Business (ISB), Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs), SP Jain Institute of Management and Research (SPJIMR), XLRI, and IMT are just some of the schools that use GMAT scores for admissions to their MBA programs for experienced professionals.
How Long is a GMAT Score Valid?
A GMAT score is valid for five years. As the exam is completely computer administered, all applicants taking it will be shown their final score (on 800) at the test centre itself, and will have the option to cancel it right then, if it is not up to expectations.

What is GRE Test?
Graduate Record Examination (GRE) is an international standardized test required for admission into Graduate Schools in the United States of America. The test is organized and administered by Education Testing Services (ETS). GRE is conducted in offline mode three times a year and in online mode throughout the year.
GRE intends to assess candidates’ verbal reasoning, quantitative reasoning, analytical writing, and critical thinking skills. A candidate can take the test a maximum of five times over a period of 12 months. GRE Score is valid for up to five years.
GRE or GMAT, Which one to Choose?
- GRE General Test evaluates applicants on parameters learned overtime; consequently, it is easier to score high on GRE than on GMAT.
- GRE costs less than GMAT or any other international management entrance test that measure applicants on the same skills.
- GRE Score is accepted by business schools across the world, including Ivy leagues like Harvard Business School, Stanford University, HEC Paris, London Business School, and Oxford University.
Exams for Indian Institutions
While both GMAT, CAT and MAT, along with other management exams, can unlock the doors to renowned management programmes in good institutions, still candidates feel better off evaluating various criteria before making their decision, such as MBA from India versus abroad, programme cost, MBA entrance test to take etc.
The number of CAT takers has crossed the two lakh mark in 2018. Over the past nine years, the approximate number of test takers ranged from 1.67 lakh to 1.99 lakh. For CAT 2018, out of a total number of 2,40,338 applicants, 2,09,405 candidates appeared for the actual test indicating the motivation of candidates to study in reputed business schools.
