In a significant step towards promoting regional languages in higher education, the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Udaipur will offer students the option to pursue a Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) in Hindi starting from the 2026-27 academic session. The move is aligned with the central government’s policy to promote Indian languages in higher education.
The new BBA programme, which will be offered in an online mode, will allow students to choose either English or Hindi as their medium of instruction. The initiative aims to make management education more accessible to students from Hindi-medium backgrounds, many of whom face language barriers when pursuing management courses, which are traditionally taught in English.
COURSE STRUCTURE
According to the institute, the four-year programme will include 40 courses, with each course comprising 60 hours of learning. IIM Udaipur will adopt a blended learning model, with 30 hours of each course delivered through video lectures by faculty members and the remaining 30 hours through live online classes. Both IIM Udaipur faculty and guest experts from other institutions will conduct these sessions.
Video lectures and live classes will incorporate both Hindi and English, making the content accessible to a broader range of students.
With this launch, IIM Udaipur will become the first B-school in India to offer a BBA programme in an Indian language.
EXPERTS FLAG GAPS IN CONTENT, TEACHING, AND PLACEMENTS
However, the decision has raised concerns among some faculty members and education experts, particularly regarding content availability, delivery quality, and job placements. A retired IIM professor noted that there are no standard management textbooks in Hindi, which makes it challenging for students to access study materials. He also said it may be difficult for teachers to teach management in Hindi since many have never taught in that language before.
Concerns were also raised about the programme’s attractiveness to employers. Faculty members and experts believe that unless the course ensures strong placement opportunities, its popularity among students may remain limited.
Despite these challenges, IIM Udaipur’s move is being seen as a bold step toward inclusivity in management education, with the potential to open doors for many students who have traditionally been underrepresented in the field due to language barriers.
