In a significant stride towards strengthening global academic collaboration, IIT Bombay and Tohoku University, Japan, have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to launch the IIT Bombay-Tohoku University Joint Academic and Research Program.
The partnership aims to offer collaborative master’s and Ph.D. programs, creating opportunities for dual mentorship, access to cutting-edge resources, and an immersive experience in the academic environments of two globally renowned institutions. This initiative is designed to nurture advanced research and innovation while equipping students with a unique global perspective.
The program is expected to begin with a dual-degree initiative focused on research and may evolve into a fully-fledged joint institute in the future, subject to approvals from both the Senate and the Government. This progressive approach underscores the long-term vision of both universities to address pressing global challenges through education and research.
The MoU signing ceremony, held on December 19, 2024, witnessed the presence of senior representatives from both institutions. Dr. Sharad Kumar Saraf, Chairman of the Board of Governors at IIT Bombay, and Prof. Shireesh B. Kedare, Director of IIT Bombay, exchanged the agreement with Prof. Teiji Tominaga, President of Tohoku University, Japan. This event marked a milestone in the 25-year-long partnership between the two institutions.
