In a significant move to foster sustainable rural development, the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Guwahati, in partnership with HDFC Parivartan, has rolled out a trio of technology-driven initiatives designed to improve food and energy security, increase farmers’ income, and empower rural communities in Assam and Meghalaya.
Turning Waste into Wealth
A key highlight of the programme is the establishment of a Biomass Pellet Unit in Umnowe village, Meghalaya. This facility converts agricultural residue and natural biomass into eco-friendly fuel pellets, offering a cleaner alternative to traditional fuels like wood and coal. The initiative not only helps reduce environmental impact but also creates a new revenue stream for local farmers by repurposing crop waste.
Harnessing Solar Power for Agriculture
In Assam’s Hailakandi district, an innovative agrivoltaic farming model has been introduced. Under this system, farmers grow medicinal herbs beneath solar panels, allowing them to harvest both crops and solar energy from the same land. This dual-purpose approach significantly boosts land productivity and income.
Expanding Market Reach with Preservation Technology
IIT Guwahati has also set up a freeze-drying and herbal processing unit, enabling farmers to preserve fruits and herbs for extended periods without compromising quality. This technology opens doors to premium markets and export opportunities, ensuring better returns for their produce.
Empowering Farmers Through Training
These projects fall under the Focused Development Programme, which aims to support sustainable livelihoods, particularly for women’s self-help groups and farming communities. Hundreds of farmers have already undergone hands-on training and workshops, gaining the skills needed to adopt and benefit from these advanced technologies.
Together, these initiatives reflect a forward-looking approach to rural development—combining green energy, smart farming, and community empowerment to help achieve India’s sustainable development and clean energy goals.
