The Indian Institute of Technology Hyderabad (IIT Hyderabad) has been designated as an Institute of National Eminence by the Income Tax Department, Ministry of Finance, effective from 27 March 2025. With this recognition, donations to the institute now qualify for 100% tax exemption under Section 80G of the Income-tax Act, 1961.
Earlier, contributions attracted only a 50% tax deduction. The updated status is anticipated to encourage increased philanthropic support, enabling the institute to strengthen its initiatives in education, research, innovation, and infrastructure development. This move marks a significant step in IIT Hyderabad’s mission to emerge as a leading centre for scientific and technological advancements.
The recognition also aligns with the institute’s recent accomplishments, including its 8th rank in the engineering category and 12th position overall in the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) 2024. It reflects the growing importance of IIT Hyderabad in the national and international academic landscape.
Further extending its global research footprint, IIT Hyderabad has collaborated with Swinburne University of Technology, Australia, to establish SIMMECT—the Swinburne-IITH Manufacturing, Materials, Energy, and Communication Technologies Joint Research Institute. This partnership is aimed at fostering high-impact research and innovation across key sectors with potential benefits for industry and society.
The combination of enhanced financial support through tax exemptions and robust international collaborations positions IIT Hyderabad as a dynamic knowledge hub, committed to driving transformative change in science and technology.
