The IIT JEE Mains and IIT JEE Advanced eligibility requirements will be loosened by the Education Ministry, led by Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.
Even if their score falls below the 75% level in the 12th board exams, the top 20% of students in each board would henceforth be eligible for admission to IIT and NIT engineering colleges, a top source in the education ministry informed PTI.
According to the report, this criterion was established because the top 20% of students in all 12th board exams scored below the 75% standard.
Regardless of their scores in the IIT JEE Mains or IIT JEE Advanced, students from the General category must obtain a minimum of 75% of the possible points to be admitted to IIT or NIT universities. According to the most recent circulars, the required minimum score for SC/ST candidates is 65%. Its unclear whether the top 20 percentile standards would apply to pupils in categories other than general.
According to a recent report from Business Today, the Education Ministry was considering relaxing the requirements for admission to IITs and NITs through the IIT JEE. The Education Minister responded to an email from MP Karti P. Chidambaram by writing, "Thank you for your letter dated 2nd December 2022 and 15th December 2022 regarding a one-time exemption to reduce the eligibility requirements for all students appearing for the JEE Main and advanced tests in 2023. The relevant department has been notified of the issue to take the appropriate action.
Along with a request to delay the January leg of the tests, student leaders also petitioned the Bombay High Court for a similar relaxation of the requirements for admission to IIT and NIT campuses.
On Tuesday, the court denied the request to postpone the tests, but it did compel the student representatives to submit a reply, or second petition, calling for a lowering of the eligibility requirements. After the first phase of the IIT JEE Mains 2023, the Bombay High Court will preside over the case on February 21.
The National Testing Agency (NTA) will administer the JEE Mains exam in phase one from January 24 to January 31 in various locations throughout India.
