IIT Kanpur has inaugurated KALA GRAM, a Design Development Centre at the Ranjit Singh Rozi Shiksha Kendra (RSK), aimed at preserving and modernising traditional crafts. The initiative will provide artisans with a platform to explore innovative materials, techniques, and market trends, fostering collaboration with young designers from top institutions.
Speaking at the launch, IIT Kanpur Director Prof. Manindra Agrawal stated, “KALA GRAM is a major step towards empowering traditional artisans. By integrating expertise from IIT Kanpur’s faculty and external professionals, we seek to enhance rural craftsmanship and increase the value of artisans’ work.”
The event saw the presence of distinguished academicians, including Prof. Amey Karkare, Dean of Resources and Alumni, and Prof. Sandeep Sangal, Principal Investigator of the RSK project. Prof. Sangal highlighted RSK’s dual focus on education and skill development, noting that over 1,000 rural youth have been trained in the past three years.
Initially, the Centre will focus on reviving the pottery of Bithoor, handmade paper from Kalpi, and home furnishings from Kanpur. Dr. Monika Thakur, KALA GRAM’s coordinator, emphasised the importance of modern design integration to enhance artisans’ market reach.
Supported by CSR funds from Philip Morris International’s India affiliate, this initiative is already fostering women’s empowerment. IIT Kanpur remains committed to bridging the gap between traditional craftsmanship and contemporary design, contributing to sustainable development and artisan upliftment.
