Each year, fewer than 10 percent of students successfully change their branch, leaving the remaining 90 percent who go through feelings of depression, which can lead to severe mental health issues and decreased performance in subsequent semesters.
UG students admitted in 2024 will now have the opportunity to pursue a “double major” alongside their BTech (Hons) or BS (Hons) degree within their respective departments.
Several departments will offer the ‘Double Major’ program, allowing students to enroll after their first year. For instance, a student studying BTech (Hons) in mechanical engineering could choose a ‘Double Major’ in economics, while a student pursuing BS (Hons) in Physics might opt for a ‘Double Major’ in electronics and electrical communications engineering or artificial intelligence and machine learning.
Additionally, the institute will provide students the chance to obtain a “Minor” or “Micro-Specialization” in various disciplines of their interest. Recognizing the significant advancements in “Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning (AI/ML)” and its national potential, all students will be required to take at least one AI/ML elective, alongside other elective courses offered in areas such as linguistics, happiness and well-being, Indian knowledge systems, and performing arts.
From the academic year 2024-25, IIT Kharagpur will launch the Semester Away Program (SAP) for undergraduate students. This program allows UG students to spend a semester at another esteemed national or international institute, industry, or research laboratory, while earning full credits equivalent to those of a regular semester.
Additionally, if necessary, UG students can integrate their mandatory 8-week summer internship with the semester-long SAP program. This arrangement provides them with an opportunity to spend nearly 8 months in another reputable organization or industry worldwide.
