As a major change in the fee structure of the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), IIT M.Tech fees has been raised to prevent drop-outs. Students of M.Tech, who so far had to pay only about two-thirds of the fee that B.Tech students paid, will now have to pay an equal amount.
The decision has been taken looking to the fact that over 2,400 students dropped out of various IITs in the last two years. As per the stats, a majority of the drop-outs were on post-graduate level.
It is to be noted that there is no change in fee structure for the under-graduate level.
The govt in a move also decided to offer an exit option to weaker students at B Tech, IIT. Govt said, “There would be students who would not be able to finish their course. Those have an option to take a three-year BSc degree without leaving the institution.”
These initiatives were taken at a meeting of the IIT Council that included HRD Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal ‘Nishank’ all along directors of the IIT.
Change in Faculty Recruitment
The chair committee also included new initiative for the faculty recruitment in the IIT where once in every three years the faculty would be reviewed by the internal committee. Also, the faculty has to undergo the review by external committee once in every five years. Further retention and promotions shall be decided on the basis of those assessments.
It is to be noted that all the previous appointments were done on permanent basis, but this tenure-track system will focus more on the performance-based review system.
