India’s dedication to climate action and sustainable development took centre stage at the Summit on Sustainability 2024, organised by the Energy Consortium – IIT Madras and Pollution Control India. The event brought together industry leaders, policymakers, and experts to discuss innovative solutions aligned with the Paris Agreement, the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and India’s national sustainability targets.
The summit highlighted India’s significant progress in emission reduction and renewable energy expansion, underscoring the nation’s commitment to a sustainable future. Key topics covered included corporate sustainability, grassroots leadership, waste-to-wealth innovations, circular economy adoption, and sustainable infrastructure. Special emphasis was placed on Mission LiFE (Lifestyle for Environment), an initiative designed to promote environmentally responsible living.
Distinguished speakers at the inaugural ceremony included Nikhil Tambe, CEO of The Energy Consortium, IIT Madras; Dr. Indumathi Nambi, Professor at IIT Madras; and Nishta Gupta, Head of Sustainability at Suzlon Energy Ltd. Notable figures from academia, industry, and NGOs also contributed to the discussions, including Nandakumar E, CEO of the International Centre for Clean Water, and Dr. Anuradda Ganesh, Co-Founder of ARANTREE Consulting Services Pvt Ltd.
Nandakumar E stressed the importance of water conservation, noting that “Water is the lifeblood of society and industry. At the International Centre for Clean Water, we aim to foster a culture of respect for water, ensuring its sustainable use while advancing public health and environmental resilience.”
Dr. Ganesh highlighted the role of evidence-based solutions in driving decarbonisation, stating, “Sustainability is not just an agenda but a critical necessity shaped by climate urgency, regulatory pressures, and social responsibility.”
The summit underscored the urgency for bolder climate action, with global experts pointing out the economic and social consequences of inaction. The event served as a platform to strengthen collaboration across sectors, enabling India to take a leading role in global sustainability efforts and accelerate progress towards its net-zero targets.
