In a significant step towards revolutionising digital education, the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras has announced a new initiative to enhance the learning experience for students enrolled in its Bachelor of Science (BS) program in Data Science and Applications. Through its Centre for Outreach and Digital Education (CODE), IIT Madras has entered into a formal collaboration with the Scaler School of Technology (SST) to integrate artificial intelligence (AI)-based learning tools into its curriculum.
This initiative is aimed at offering personalised, flexible, and accessible education to learners across India. The collaboration reflects IIT Madras’s commitment to democratizing quality education and empowering learners with advanced technological support systems.
AI-Driven Learning for a National Student Base
These AI tools were initially tested in a pilot program involving 500 students earlier this year, with encouraging outcomes. Following the successful trial, IIT Madras has expanded the initiative in partnership with Scaler, a technology-driven educational platform known for its practical, hands-on learning approach and innovation in artificial intelligence.
The AI-based tools will now be deployed at scale to support a broad range of learning functions including:
Interactive coding practice
Real-time feedback on assignments and concepts
Job interview preparation modules
Assistance in understanding difficult course material
These tools are designed to provide adaptive support, allowing students to learn at their own pace while receiving continuous guidance and feedback—crucial for mastering subjects in data science and related fields.
Statements from Leadership
Professor Andrew Thangaraj, Chairperson of CODE at IIT Madras, emphasized the transformative potential of this partnership. “The thoughtful application of AI in education allows us to extend quality instruction to a much larger audience. These tools will not only support learning but also boost students’ confidence and independence,” he said.
Abhimanyu Saxena, Co-founder of Scaler, echoed this sentiment, stating that SST is committed to solving real-world classroom challenges using AI. “It’s a proud moment for us to contribute to a nationally respected institution like IIT Madras. The tools we’ve developed are built with deep insights from engineers and students working together, making them uniquely practical and effective,” he added.
Collaboration Framework and Privacy
The formal Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between IIT Madras and Scaler was signed on June 2, 2025, with an initial validity of one year. Both institutions have the option to extend the partnership based on its impact and outcomes.
While the AI tools will carry Scaler’s branding and technological credit, IIT Madras will retain full ownership and control over student data and privacy-related decisions. This ensures alignment with institutional data governance standards and reinforces student confidentiality.
Looking Ahead
This collaboration marks a significant milestone in IIT Madras’s ongoing efforts to innovate in online and hybrid learning environments. The institute’s BS in Data Science and Applications program, launched to provide flexible and industry-relevant education, continues to evolve with the inclusion of emerging technologies like AI.
As the education landscape rapidly shifts toward digital platforms, initiatives like this one reflect how premier institutions are responding with agility and foresight. The integration of AI is expected to enrich the academic journey for thousands of students and position IIT Madras as a leader in next-generation education delivery.
