Three foreign universities are currently operating in India, and the University Grants Commission (UGC) is considering approving over 50 top-tier international universities to enhance educational opportunities for students, Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan informed the Parliament on Wednesday.
During the Question Hour in Rajya Sabha, Pradhan addressed concerns about the significant outflow of resources, noting that nearly 14-15 lakh Indian students pursue education abroad. To curb this trend and encourage advanced research within India, the UGC has revised its regulations to facilitate the entry of foreign universities.
Expansion of Foreign Universities in India
Pradhan clarified that, contrary to previous estimates, three foreign universities are already functioning in India. Additionally, over 50 global universities are in discussions with various state governments and have applied for UGC approval.
“We will evaluate these institutions based on our academic standards, and approvals will be granted accordingly. This move is in the best interest of students,” Pradhan stated.
Ensuring Institutional Autonomy and Compliance
The minister reaffirmed the government’s commitment to institutional autonomy, assuring that foreign universities would operate with academic independence while adhering to Indian educational regulations.
On the issue of regulatory compliance, Pradhan emphasized that the government remains dedicated to upholding high educational standards, with stringent penalties for institutions that violate regulations.
The expansion of foreign universities in India is expected to provide students with world-class education, reduce dependence on overseas institutions, and strengthen the country’s higher education ecosystem.
