Indian students are showing a clear shift in preference when it comes to studying abroad, with destinations like Singapore, Ireland, and Dubai gaining momentum over traditional favorites such as the UK, US, and Australia.
According to a recent report by study-abroad platform Gradding.com, Indian student enrollments in these emerging destinations have jumped by 38%, reflecting a growing attraction to their student-friendly visa policies, globally recognized institutions, and improved employment opportunities.
Meanwhile, the appeal of established study hubs is waning. Canada saw a sharp 41% drop in Indian student numbers in 2024, followed by 27.7% in the UK and 13% in the US, as per government data. This decline coincides with tighter post-study work visa regulations, immigration curbs, and limited dependent visa allowances, which have created uncertainty for students seeking long-term career growth abroad.
Emerging Destinations Offer Quality and Affordability
In contrast, Singapore, Ireland, and Dubai are being seen as more reliable and cost-effective alternatives. These countries boast top-ranked universities, modern infrastructure, and strategic industry collaborations, particularly in finance, technology, and healthcare—fields that are in high demand.
For example, Singapore alone has seen a 25% annual increase in Indian student enrollments. If there were 10,000 Indian students enrolled previously, this number would now exceed 12,500.
“These evolving preferences reflect a transformative shift in global education trends. Students are now more strategic, opting for countries that offer not only academic excellence but also clearer pathways to career growth,” said Mamta Shekhawat, founder of Gradding.com.
A Strategic Shift in Global Education
Despite traditional destinations still accounting for a significant share of outbound Indian students—over 890,000 in 2023—the proportional rise in interest toward less conventional countries is reshaping the international education landscape.
With new policies favoring international students and a focus on skill-based hiring, destinations like Dubai, Singapore, and Ireland are becoming increasingly attractive. Their mix of affordability, accessible visa policies, and global opportunities is allowing Indian students to make more informed and future-ready education decisions.
As this 38% surge in Indian outbound students continues, these emerging hubs are expected to gain even greater prominence in the years ahead.
