Starting January 10, 2025, Indian applicants for Type D visas will be required to schedule individual appointments for fingerprinting at Italian consulates. Type D visas are for long-term stays, including study visas for those wishing to study or conduct research in Italy for more than 90 days, such as undergraduate and postgraduate programs.
In 2024, 6,017 Indian students were in Italy on study visas, up from 5,196 in 2023. The number was 4,791 in 2019 and dropped during the pandemic years (3,211 in 2020 and 3,008 in 2021).
In a related development, Indian students will now be allowed to stay in Italy for up to 12 months after completing their studies to gain professional experience. Additionally, the Italian government has set quotas for non-seasonal and seasonal Indian workers, with 12,000 and 8,000 reserved for 2023-2025 under the Flows Decree.
