Ivy League schools are considered to be the most prestigious of all colleges in the world. The Ivy League schools are primarily located in the Northeastern part of the United States of America.
There are eight total colleges that are considered to be Ivy League. These schools are Brown, Harvard, Cornell, Princeton, Dartmouth, Yale, and Columbia universities and the University of Pennsylvania. Of all institutions of higher learning, these elite schools are considered to be the most outstanding and the most sought-after in terms of acceptance and graduation.
A major aspect of the league, apart from the academics, is the fierce athletic rivalry among the member colleges, which spans over decades.
These universities were foundational in the development of education in the United States, seven of them predating the American Revolution. They also provided the teachers and administrators for many of the institutions of higher education founded subsequently. Thus, the education of significant early Americans can be traced predominantly to these schools.
The name Ivy League comes from the Ivy plants that cover the college buildings.
The reason why Ivy League colleges are considered to be so prestigious is because of its low acceptance rate. Many world leaders and a majority of US Presidents graduated from the Ivy League colleges.
Apart from politicians, Ivy Colleges have been home for some of the highly celebrated personalities like Emma Watson, Conan O’Brien, Julia Stiles, John Karsinski, Rachel Dratch, John Legend, Matt Damon, Edward Norton, Rashida Jones, Natalie Portman, James Franco, among others.
