The Government of Japan has opened online applications for the prestigious MEXT Scholarship 2025–2026. Indian students aspiring to pursue higher education in Japan can now apply for fully funded programmes supported by Japan’s Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT).
The scholarship is designed to promote international academic exchange and is available across multiple academic levels – undergraduate, master’s, PhD, research, specialised training, and technical college programmes.
Application Dates and Categories
According to the Embassy of Japan in India, applications are open for the following categories:
Research Students: Includes the option to transition into a master’s or PhD. Application period: 14 April to 13 May 2025.
Undergraduate Students: Leads to a bachelor’s degree. Application period: 22 April to 26 May 2025.
National Institute of Technology: Leads to an associate degree. Application period: 22 April to 26 May 2025.
Specialised Training College: Ends with a certificate. Application period: 22 April to 26 May 2025.
Who Can Apply?
Eligible candidates must:
* Be citizens of countries maintaining diplomatic ties with Japan
* Be born on or after 2 April 1990 (for research category)
* Hold relevant academic qualifications
* Be in good health
* Possess basic proficiency in English or Japanese (course-dependent)
Application Process and Documents
Applicants must first submit documents to the Japanese Embassy or Consulates in India. The selection process includes a written test, interview, and final recommendation to MEXT.
