Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw is the chairperson and managing director of Biocon Limited, a biotechnology company based in Bangalore has been conferred with the ‘Honorary Doctorate’ by Deakin University, a leading Global University based in Victoria, Australia.
She has been recognized for her pioneering entrepreneurial role in the field of biotechnology and for her sustained significant contribution to Industry-Academia collaboration between Australia & India.
In company press release, Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw, CMD of Biocon, said: “I am immensely proud to receive this coveted recognition from the prestigious Deakin University of Australia and feel even more inspired to be presented with this honour in the year when Deakin University is celebrating 25 years of association with India, the longest sustained period of engagement by any Australian University with India.”
The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Australia have also appointed Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw as Australian Global Alumni Ambassador in 2016 and she is the Victorian Business Ambassador for the State Govt. of Victoria, Australia.
She has been felicitated with several honorary doctorates in the past from global universities like Ballarat (2004), University of Abertay (2007), University of Glasgow (2008), Heriot-Watt University (2008), National University of Ireland (2012) and Trinity College, Dublin (2012) for her pre-eminent contributions in the field of biotechnology.
She is also a Member of the Board of Trustees of the prestigious Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), USA and more recently she has been elected as a Member of the National Academy of Engineering, USA.
She is also Chairperson IIM- Bangalore and in the Financial Times Top 50 Women in the business.
