In a landmark achievement, the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports has conferred the First Runner-Up MAKA Sports Trophy for 2024 to Lovely Professional University (LPU). This recognition marks a historic milestone, as LPU becomes the first private institution to secure this honour for two consecutive years—a distinction unmatched since 1956. The award will be formally presented during the National Sports Awards ceremony at Rashtrapati Bhavan, New Delhi, on 17th January 2025, by the President of India, Droupadi Murmu.
Adding to its accolades, LPU’s athletes have earned two of the nation’s highest sporting honours: the Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award 2024 and the Arjuna Award. Harmanpreet Singh, Captain of the Indian Hockey Team, will receive the Khel Ratna Award, recognising his pivotal role in India’s Paris Olympics hockey victory. Meanwhile, LPU students Sukhjeet Singh and Jarmanpreet Singh will be honoured with the Arjuna Award for their outstanding performances in hockey.
Dr Ashok Kumar Mittal, LPU’s Founder Chancellor, applauded the achievement, emphasising the university’s dedication to fostering sporting excellence through state-of-the-art infrastructure and scholarships. LPU’s consistent achievements reaffirm its status as a hub for elite sports training, exemplifying its commitment to balancing education and athletics.
