Through a government resolution issued on March 18, 2024, the Maharashtra government has outlined the responsibilities of government nominees in autonomous colleges. In the state, government nominees have always been present on the boards of autonomous colleges, but their roles were never explicitly outlined. Now, they are expected to attend all governing body meetings and ensure the budget comprehensively represents all aspects, serving as the government’s true representatives.
Usually, a government nominee is an educationist holding at least the rank of a professor or a government officer in either the Directorate of Higher Education or the State Council of Higher Education. Their role is to serve as a liaison between the institutions and the government. The government resolution (GR) stated that defining their duties and responsibilities had been under consideration for a considerable time, leading to the issuance of the guidelines.
