Maharashtra Government Outlines Responsibilities of Government Nominees in Autonomous College Boards

As per the GR, the government nominees are required to attend all board meetings of their respective institutions and notify the government beforehand if they are unable to do so. Their involvement in strategic decision-making processes, aimed at improving academic quality in colleges, is also recommended. They must communicate the government’s vision and priority areas to the board and ensure compliance with government policies. Additionally, they are expected to resolve contentious matters between the college, university, and government. Implementation of the National Education Policy of 2020 is also included in the guidelines.

According to an official from the department, the objective is to enhance efficiency in the process and obtain valuable feedback from the nominees regarding on-ground activities. According to the official, the government is in the process of clearly defining the roles of it’s nominees, even within private universities.
