The National Law School of India University (NLSIU) in Bengaluru, a pioneer in legal education, is set to launch a three-year BA (Hons) programme in 2025, marking a shift towards becoming a multidisciplinary institution. Known for its flagship five-year integrated BA.LLB course introduced in 1988 by N.R. Madhava Menon, NLSIU redefined legal education in India by combining law with humanities and social sciences.
This new programme aims to diversify NLSIU’s academic offerings with majors in History, Sociology and Anthropology, Politics, and Economics, alongside minors or double majors. Students will also engage in practical courses on topics like AI, Filmmaking, Entrepreneurship, and Digital Journalism, as well as Indian language studies.
To accommodate its expansion, the Karnataka government has leased an additional seven acres of land to NLSIU, supplementing its existing 23-acre campus.
Despite concerns about deviating from its core mission as a legal institution, the university asserts that the new programme will not undermine the BA.LLB course. Plans to introduce majors in philology, literature, and arts and culture are also underway, reflecting NLSIU’s vision to evolve with the changing educational landscape while maintaining its legacy of academic excellence.
