The National Medical Commission (NMC) has issued a notification outlining new mandatory requirements for faculty promotions in medical colleges. To be eligible for promotion to Associate Professor or Professor, medical faculty members must complete the Basic Course in Medical Education Technology (BCMET) from institutions designated by the NMC.
According to the Teachers Eligibility Qualification in Medical Institutions Regulations, 2022, faculty appointments and promotions in Broad Specialties (MD/MS) and Super Specialties (DM/MCh) require completion of BCMET training. This rule applies to permitted and recognized medical colleges across India.
For government medical colleges where faculty appointments are made at the last moment, the Postgraduate Medical Education Board (PGMEB) has provided an exception. In such cases, an affidavit must be obtained from the Principal Secretary, Medical Education of the respective State/UT, confirming that the appointed faculty will complete the BCMET training within the next academic year.
Faculty members must complete the training before the application call for the Letter of Permission (LOP) for the academic year 2026-27, expected by October 2025.
This regulation ensures that medical educators are well-equipped with modern teaching methodologies, ultimately enhancing medical education standards in India.
