The proposed merger of Urdu as a foreign language has been objected as the Urdu Department of Panjab University said that Urdu was similar to the likes of Hindi and Punjabi.
The Urdu Department Coordinator Mr Abbas said, ‘Urdu was cultured in India since decades.”
A “wrong impression” is created by certain elements and he said that this is far from the truth.
According to the initial proposal on the merger, it was meant to share infrastructure and human resources in a way that improves the academic performance.
Urdu Department was introduced in Panjab University in 1976.
Also, in other cases, it has been also proposed that several other departments like Centre for Nano-science and Nano-technology, and the Centre for Medical Physics are to be combined with the Department of Physics.
