A potential vaccine for COVID-19 failed to protect vaccinated monkeys from being infected by virus. However, it appeared to protect against Pneumonia.
Initially, it was estimated that the vaccine would provide good results on humans. Infact, a pune-based Serum Institute had also announced its plans to manufacture four to five million doses.
However, detailed results of trials in monkey suggested that the vaccine may not be able to protect people from being infected and passing on the infection to others.
The research paper is yet to be peer-reviewed.
How did research take place?
Few days back, a control vaccine called ChAdOx1 GFP was administered on few monkeys. Some other monkeys were given a candidate vaccine.
The results on monkey were to give suggestion for human vaccine.
However, different opinions on vaccine has put the solution in hold for few days. This vaccine is among the eight that are ahead in terms of being tested in humans for efficacy.
It seems that it might take some more days for the proper vaccine to come out.
