Visva Bharati University which annually organizes the Pous Mela 2019, will not be holding the Mela this year. As per the latest update, the varsity has decided not to hold the annual Pous Mela 2019 due to logistical issues. Instead, the organization and other aspects of Pous Mela 2019 has been handed over to the Santiniketan Trust which will be organizing the mela this year. Pous Mela is an annual gala organized by the Visva Bharati University in the month of December at West Bengal’s Birbhum district. The mela has been a cultural extravaganza which attracts lakhs of people, including international tourists to the district.
Commenting upon its decision to not hold the mela this year, Anirban Sarkar, PRO, Visva Bharati said, “It is not possible for an educational institution like Visva Bharati to organise such a big event like the Pous Mela in a manner directed by the National Green Tribunal and other authorities.”
According to the press briefing, the decision to withdraw from holding the Pous Mela was taken at a meeting held at the university premises. The meeting was attended by Visva Bharati University Vice Chancellor Bidyut Chakrabarty, varisty registrar and senior members of the Santiniketan Trust.
