Prospects
Sports Industry is growing by 12 percent every year. According to FICCI’s vision document, the sports ecosystem will demand nearly four million skilled Sports Management professionals by the year 2022. There are numerous leagues such as IPL, PKL, ISL and other national-level sporting events like Khelo India Youth Games. Also, individual sport and team sport athletes are performing well at national and international level and there is a need to manage their activities. Sub-sectors in sports management like marketing and public relations, grassroot development, sports retail and manufacturing, etc. are prospering too. All of these justify that sports management is growing.
Importance of sports management
In the year 2008, India witnessed two landmark events in the sports landscape. India had initiated its own annual sporting property which is the Indian Premiere League (IPL) and Abhinav Bindra had won a medal at the Olympic Games the same year. Other leagues like Pro Kabaddi League, Indian Soccer League, Indian Hockey League, Futsal, Premier Badminton League too flourished in India. With such leagues getting tremendous response and fan following, there is a demand for manpower to manage such events. There comes sports management!
For example, students of IISM have actively worked at Khelo India Youth Games 2019, IPL, Pro Kabaddi League and many more such national-level sporting events.

Industry challenges
This industry looks very glamorous from the outside but like every other sector there is a lot of hard work. One should have a ‘never give up’ and a positive attitude. At times, one would have to step out of his comfort zone. If he/she is a true sports enthusiast, he/she would be happy to do it. There are sportspersons who couldn’t continue with their game due to various reasons. Sports Management is an extremely satisfying field for them.
Future plans
We at IISM always ensure that we are keeping up with the trends in the sports landscape in order to contribute our best to the industry. As mentioned before, we want to continue providing quality sports management education and train professionals who’d be capable enough to mould the sports industry and take it to another level.
