When did you decide to start preparing for the entrance exam?
I had aimed to crack IIT-JEE with good score from class 9 onwards. However, the actual preparation started from class 11 at Allen Career Institute in Mumbai. I stayed at Allen for two years to prepare for JEE. For the past two years I use to study for 12 hours a day.
How does it feel being a topper?
It’s been great to be identified as the national level topper, cracking one of the toughest entrance examinations. Everyone around is happy for me. The news of becoming a national level topper had been shocking for me and my family. I was confident of securing a good score but never thought of becoming the national level topper. I come from a family of IITians. My elder brother is currently pursuing engineering from IIT Delhi. Therefore, securing good score in JEE was my motto since my school days.
What de-stress mantra would you give for other students?
My de-stress mantra would be keep yourself calm during the exam time.
Since I was consistent in my studies, I had experienced little anxiety during the exams. Playing board games with friends in the hostel, listening to music and following my favourite television series in my free time kept me relaxed. I stayed away from mobile phones and social media.
How many mock tests did you take before taking the exam?
Allen Career Institute had started conducting mock tests in November 2018 itself. I had appeared for around 40 mock tests since then till the exam day. Seeking coaching had been a unique experience. The teachers were good and quite helpful during the course period. As the teachers lived in the same campus therefore they remained available all the time to resolve our academic difficulties. This proved to be quite helpful to secure a good score in JEE.
Any suggestions for JEE aspirants?
Do not study things as they are taught to you. Ask questions and try to have value to add to the things that are taught to you. Explore newer things, be curious about different ideas and generate interests in all the subjects. Additionally:
Solve a lot of practice papers
Though it’s important to practise and revise, but do not overload yourself in the last few days.
Remain confident and calm
Mark the answers only after carefully reading the questions
What do you aim in the future?
I would like to pursue Computer Science from IIT-Bombay. It was my brother’s interest in Computer Science that drove me towards writing the entrance exam. I would also like to do masters in the same field.
