As more Indian students head overseas for higher education, unexpected events like visa revocations, university closures, and job losses are prompting insurers to introduce more comprehensive travel insurance plans tailored to students’ needs.
When Sakshi from Lucknow enrolled in a private business college in Quebec, Canada, she thought her academic journey was set. But when the college shut down in 2023 due to financial insolvency, she was forced to return to India, bearing the costs of her flight and resettlement.
To safeguard against such risks, Indian insurance companies now offer student travel plans that go beyond traditional medical coverage — covering visa cancellations, sudden job loss, and even university shutdowns.

What Do These New Student Insurance Policies Cover?
“Navigating foreign academic systems comes with risks — visa issues, job loss, even university insolvency. These need specialised insurance,” said Vivek Chaturvedi, CMO at Digit Insurance.
While emergency medical coverage remains standard, new plans offer additional protection:
- Reimbursement for return flights and temporary housing if a university shuts down
- Coverage for visa cancellation due to external factors (not the student’s fault)
- Optional add-ons for job loss, especially due to company layoffs or closures
Ajay Shah of Care Health Insurance explained that once a student enters the host country, coverage begins — often including accommodation and travel in case of institutional closure.
Limitations and Exclusions: Know Before You Buy
These enhanced plans come with conditions and fine print:
Common Exclusions:
- Self-inflicted injuries or suicide
- Injuries from extreme or adventure sports
- Terrorism or war-related events
- Visa cancellations due to misconduct or overstepping work limits
- Academic failures or legal violations
“Immigration bans or restrictions imposed by host countries are also typically not covered,” noted Meet Kapadia from Policybazaar.

Job Loss Coverage: Optional, Conditional
Not all policies automatically include job loss protection. Where available, it’s typically an add-on and applies only to involuntary loss, such as layoffs.
“Coverage doesn’t apply if the student quits, underperforms, or is terminated for cause,” Kapadia clarified.
Coverage for university insolvency often includes:
- One-way airfare to India
- Temporary accommodation expenses
- Capped reimbursements (typically up to $7,500)
Making a Claim: Documents You’ll Need
To process a claim, insurers require:
- Proof of compliance with university regulations
- Official complaints or notices of closure
- Travel and lodging receipts
- Valid visa documentation tied to the institution
For medical or death-related claims:
- Hospital certificates and prescriptions
- FIRs or death certificates (if applicable)
“Claims are usually processed within 7 to 30 business days, depending on documentation,” Kapadia added.

Why This Matters
With traditional international policies often expensive and ill-fitted for Indian students, these tailored plans fill an urgent need. For students aiming to study in the US, UK, Canada, or Australia, understanding and securing the right insurance can prevent financial hardship in case things go unexpectedly wrong.
