Atul Kumar an 18-year-old Dalit student, after not being able to secure admission at IIT Dhanbad due to missing a deadline, receives a second chance in an unprecedented move, when the Supreme Court granted him admission into the BTech course.
He achieved the dream that many students across India strive for — cracking the prestigious IIT JEE-Advanced examination. His hard work earned him a seat in the Electronics Engineering branch at IIT (ISM) Dhanbad but fell short due to missing the deadline.
The Uttar Pradesh government stated that it would help Dalit student Atul Kumar to get admission at IIT Dhanbad and that the social welfare department to bear his entire fee through a scholarship.
“Under the state’s scholarship scheme, the Social Welfare Department will bear the entire fee of IIT through scholarship so that Atul’s education can be ensured,” an official statement said.
Son of a daily wage worker, Atul Kumar lost his seat at IIT-Dhanbad after missing the fee deadline as his admission stopped due to the non-payment of fees. He performed well in the IIT JEE exam and got a seat in the Electronics Engineering branch, Atul residing in the village of Khatauli tehsil of Muzaffarnagar district, the only barrier was he got stuck due to the non-payment of fees by June 24.

After making multiple efforts his family finally approached the Supreme Court. The matter came to the notice of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath after the intervention of Supreme Court and then the government decided to fully help the student by bearing his entire fees.
The chief minister immediately gave instructions to ensure all possible assistance for Atul, the statement said.
The state government has contacted IIT Dhanbad to immediately take necessary action to complete the admission process.
Social Welfare Minister Asim Arun also contacted the student’s family via a phone call assuring them that the state government would finance his entire education.
Hence, His entire four-year study fees will be paid through the scholarship under the initiative of the Uttar Pradesh government but also the initial fees of Atul will be deposited.
