Ipsa scientia potestas est, as once rightly said by Francis Bacon, means “Knowledge itself is power”. Such was the power exhibited by each witty mind that had showed up for a debate which was hosted by BVM Global group of schools, Coimbatore. The Department of Humanities, BVM Global conducted “Battle of Wits”, a debate on Socio-economic factors on the 12 th of October, 2022. The programme was organised by a young and persistent team constituted by teaching faculty and students of classes 11 and 12. After a good deal of meticulous deliberation, the topics were finalised. GST – Cost and Benefit, One Nation One Policy: Asset or Liability, Crypto Currency: Angel or Demon to name a few. The debate was judged by two most venerated professionals – Mr. G Jayakumar, Advocate with years of judicial experience and Mr. Ravi Prakash Duraisamy, co-founder of ‘The Compassact
Foundation’ Six reputed schools in the city, including the host school, namely, CS Academy, Chinmaya Vidyalaya, GD Matriculation, Vidya Niketan and Peepal Prodigy competed against each other. The debate was administered in three rounds; the first being one of preliminary wherein participants from all the six schools contested against each other. The second round comprised four schools facing each other in the Semi-finals. Eventually, the two best schools from the Semi-final round advanced to the finals.
The topic for the final round was Affirmative Actions in India with one of the finalists’ Peepal Prodigy speaking against it and the other, BVM Global speaking for it. The final round had continued for thirty minutes when the moderator checked the eloquent arguments and points of rebuttal of both the teams. Having scrutinised the
points presented by the contenders, the judges announced the winning team – BVM Global and the runner-up – Peepal Prodigy falling short to the winners only by a narrow margin!
