In a transformative move for higher education, India is set to welcome campuses from five globally renowned universities, including the Illinois Institute of Technology (USA), University of Liverpool (UK), and Victoria University (Australia). Approved by the University Grants Commission (UGC), these institutions are among the first wave of foreign universities authorized to establish independent campuses in India.
This initiative aligns with the goals of India’s National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which aims to position India as a global education hub. With UGC’s approval, these institutions will offer international-quality education locally, reducing the cost and barriers traditionally associated with studying abroad.
Global Education, Local Access
The presence of these universities in India is expected to significantly reduce the financial and logistical burden for students. Learners from India, neighbouring South Asian countries, and African nations—often challenged by visa restrictions and high living costs—can now access international curricula, faculty, and degrees without leaving the region.
University leaders have confirmed that the quality of education, faculty engagement, and campus infrastructure will mirror that of their home institutions, ensuring students receive a truly global learning experience.

A Shifting Educational Landscape
With over 13 lakh Indian students pursuing education overseas in 2024 alone, the demand for global learning remains high. However, with international universities now entering India, the trend may shift, offering high-quality alternatives within national borders.
This move is also expected to spur innovation and competition within the Indian higher education sector, pushing domestic universities to enhance their infrastructure, academic standards, and global relevance.
