The University Grants Commission (UGC) has extended the deadline for universities to submit nominations for the PhD Excellence Citation to April 15, 2025. The move comes in response to multiple requests from institutions across the country seeking more time for the nomination process. The earlier deadline was March 31, 2025.
In an official notification, the UGC stated:
“UGC invited nominations for ‘PhD Excellence Citation’ from universities on 01.01.2025 with 31.03.2025 as the last date. Based on requests received for an extension, the new deadline is 15.04.2025. Universities are requested to complete nominations on the designated portal on or before the new deadline.”

- Social Sciences (including Education & Humanities)
- Indian Languages
- Commerce & Management
The award ceremony will be held annually on Teacher’s Day (September 5).
Selection Process
The selection will involve a two-tier evaluation:
- University-level Screening Committee: Shortlists nominations within each institution.
- UGC-level Selection Committee: Final selection of awardees from the shortlisted candidates.
Objective
The citation aims to inspire emerging researchers and strengthen India’s research ecosystem by recognising exceptional doctoral work and encouraging innovation across disciplines.
