The university grants commission has mandated and reminded all its affiliated universities and colleges to introduce a compulsory six-course module on Environmental Studies at all its under-grad degrees.
The initiative was already active since 2013, but the announcement came as a routine job of the UGC to remind the universities and colleges about the inclusion of the course.
The decision on six-module course in environmental studies came after a petition was submitted by advocate MC Mehta. The SC in 1991 took the decision of mandating the course.
Later on, UGC took two decades to conceptualise and introduce a course on Environmental Studies.
The course is important owing to the day to day climatic changes people are witnessing. A strong awareness in the UG course is important to spread the word of care and caution for the future.
