The UK Government has unveiled a series of new immigration measures, including stricter English language requirements and reduced post-study work duration for international students, a move expected to significantly impact Indian migrants and students.
The tougher rules were tabled in Parliament on Tuesday as part of a wider effort to control immigration and ensure that foreign workers and students contribute meaningfully to British society.
TOUGHER ENGLISH TESTS FOR MIGRANTS
From January 8, 2026, all skilled visa applicants will be required to take a new ‘Secure English Language Test’ conducted by a Home Office-approved provider. The results will be verified as part of the visa application process.
Applicants must now demonstrate proficiency in speaking, listening, reading and writing English at a level equivalent to A-Level or Class 12, referred to as level B2. The UK Home Office believes this will ensure migrants are “better able to integrate into life in the UK.”
“This country has always welcomed those who come to this country and contribute, but it is unacceptable for migrants to come here without learning our language, unable to contribute to our national life,” said UK Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood.
“If you come to this country, you must learn our language and play your part,” she added, as reported by PTI.
GRADUATE VISA DURATION CUT TO 18 MONTHS
The government has also shortened the time allowed for international graduates to find jobs under the Graduate Route visa.
From January 1, 2027, students will have 18 months, down from the current two years, to secure graduate-level employment after completing their studies.
The Graduate Route, popular among Indian students, allows international graduates to remain in the UK while seeking work. However, PhD graduates will continue to enjoy a three-year post-study stay, as announced earlier this year.
“This change is informed by data showing that too many graduates are not progressing into graduate-level employment which the Graduate Route was created to facilitate access to,” said Home Office Minister Mike Tapp in a written statement.
“It is intended to ensure that those who remain in the UK transition into graduate-level jobs and properly contribute to the UK economy,” he added.
HIGHER FINANCIAL REQUIREMENTS FOR STUDENTS
In addition, financial requirements for student visas will rise for the 2025–26 academic year.
Foreign students will now need to show higher proof of funds, 1,529 pounds per month for London (up from 1,483 pounds) and 1,171 pounds per month for other regions (up from 1,136 pounds).
These measures are part of the UK’s ‘Immigration White Paper’, which seeks to reduce net migration while maintaining opportunities for highly skilled professionals and genuine students.
